Canon 550D

A great little camera

I’ve been using the Canon 550d also known as the T2i for the last five months to shoot extreme sports and a couple of short films. Its an awesome little camera for such a reasonable price. The 550d has a great shallow depth of field which gives the image a film like quality and some beautiful results. Another great advantage with these cameras is the size as they can get angles other big cameras like the Red wouldn’t be able to achieve. However DSLR cameras like the 550d still has a long way to go before it will reach the same filming quality and reliability of the latest Red cameras. But for the price vs quality this is currently one of the best cameras you can get your hands on, especially if your on a modest budget. A great lens to start off with is the 50mm 1.8 alongside the kits lens. You’ll be able to get some fantastic results without blowing the bank. Check out this music video which was shot entirely on the 550d:

Apple iphone

The New Generation of Video

The much anticipated iphone 4 was released in the states just under a week ago. It’s something I’m really looking forward to using and I’m amped for its release in New Zealand late next month. What I’m most excited about is its great video capability which boasts 720p HD. I came across this short film ‘Apple of My Eye’ which was shot and edited entirely on the iphone. I remember less than ten years ago I was editing on a huge clunky video player and tv set, now you can shoot and edit an entire short film on your phone, its crazy! I love the concept and I’m really looking forward to seeing how this is going to develop in the future with the rapid speed technology is changing.
